> Mute all tabs in Chrome by selecting them and choosing Mute, use Ctrl + M in Edge, or mute every tab in a window with one command. Windows and Mac steps.

To mute all tabs in Chrome, click the first tab, `Shift`-click the last to select them all, then right-click any selected tab and choose **Mute site**. That is 3 clicks, and Chrome remembers the mute for those sites.

This is for anyone hit by a stray autoplay video mid-call. Chrome has no "mute everything" shortcut, so if it happens often, Edge's `Ctrl + M`, an extension or a single command is quicker.

## How do I mute all tabs in Chrome?

Select the tabs, then mute them from the right-click menu.

1. Click the leftmost tab in the window.
2. Hold `Shift` and click the rightmost tab. To mute only some, `Ctrl`-click (`Command`-click on Mac) them instead.
3. Right-click a selected tab and choose **Mute site** (Google's [tab help](https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/2391819?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop) calls it **Mute**). Choose **Unmute** the same way later.

- **By site, not by tab:** it stays muted on future visits until you unmute it.
- **The speaker icon does not mute:** Chrome dropped click-to-mute around Chrome 71 (late 2018). The `chrome://flags` "Tab audio muting UI control" flag is not reliably available in stable Chrome.

> **Tip:** Press `Ctrl + Shift + A` (`Command + Shift + A` on Mac) to open tab search and find the noisy tab first.

## How do I mute tabs in Edge and Brave?

Both mute a single tab with one click on its speaker icon.

- **Edge:** click the speaker icon ([Microsoft's guide](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/learning-center/how-to-mute-tabs)), or press `Ctrl + M` to toggle the current tab. On Mac it is also `Ctrl + M` (Control, not Command), per [Microsoft's shortcut list](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4531783/microsoft-edge-keyboard-shortcuts). For all tabs, Microsoft points to Edge Add-ons extensions.
- **Brave:** click the speaker icon to mute and again to unmute; the `brave://flags` flag "tab-audio-icon-interactive" turns this off. Right-click offers **Mute tab** and **Mute site**; select all with `Shift`-click to mute everything.

## Which extensions mute all tabs?

Mute Tab is the more complete option and the only one here that mutes every tab except the one you are on.

| Extension | What it adds | Users | Updated |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Mute Tab](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/mute-tab/behengbkghjbommkdcbnpfhcahfigoll) | All, all except active, other windows; auto-mute; shortcuts | 6,000 (4.5 stars) | Oct 11, 2026 |
| [unMute](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/unmute/lfedioibcednammacdoioeonimdbpige) | Auto-mute all except current or chosen tab | 3,000 (4.8 stars) | May 2024 |

Store details as of October 2026. Skip unMute if you want an actively maintained tool; it has not been updated since 2024.

## How do I mute a whole window with one command?

In SuperCommands, run the **Mute All Tabs** command: no tab selecting.

1. During a call, a background tab starts an autoplay video. Press `Alt + S` on any web page.
2. Type **Mute All Tabs** (`c mute` in the [command list](https://supercommands.com/docs/more-commands)) and press `Enter`. Every tab in the current window goes quiet, including background tabs.
3. After the call, press `Alt + S` and run **Unmute All Tabs** (`c unmute`).

> **Note:** It covers the current window only, and unmuting does not press play on paused media. Run `c merge` first to pull every window into one. Prefixes can differ, so type "mute" and pick the result if one does not match ([tab audio docs](https://supercommands.com/docs/tab-audio)).

## Which one should you pick?

- Pick **Edge's `Ctrl + M`** if one loud tab is the usual problem.
- Pick **Chrome's select-all and right-click** if you mute a few times a week.
- Pick **Mute Tab** if you want "mute all except this one" or auto-muting of new tabs.
- Pick **SuperCommands** if you want a keyboard command that silences a whole window in Chrome, Edge or Brave; it is free and open source, and the local version is 100% free, forever.

## FAQ

### Is there a keyboard shortcut to mute a tab in Chrome?

Not built in. Edge has `Ctrl + M`; in Chrome, assign one with Mute Tab or run **Mute All Tabs** from `Alt + S` in SuperCommands.

### Why can't I click the speaker icon to mute a tab in Chrome?

Chrome removed click-to-mute around Chrome 71 (late 2018). Right-click the tab and choose **Mute site** instead.

### Does Mute site in Chrome mute all tabs from that website?

Yes. Every tab from that site is muted, and it stays muted on later visits until you choose **Unmute site**.

### How do I mute tabs in all Chrome windows at once?

Chrome's built-in method works one window at a time. The Mute Tab extension can mute tabs in other windows too.
